Rediscovering Time and Relationships: The Impact of Quitting Social Media

Hi friends,

In June of last year, I made a decision that many might consider radical: I stepped away from all social media, with the sole exception of LinkedIn, which I maintained for professional networking. As I look back on this past year, it has become evident that this decision has been one of the most transformative experiences of my life, fostering both my personal and professional growth in ways I could never have anticipated hoped it would.

The Initial Leap: Moving Beyond the Digital Noise

The ubiquitous presence of social media in our lives is undeniable. Platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter had become my ever present companions, shaping my daily routines and interactions - apart from Facebook, I left that just after I graduated University in 2008. I realised that I was investing significant time and emotional energy in crafting online personas, consuming endless feeds of information, and seeking validation through likes and comments.

Detaching from these platforms was not merely a matter of digital detox but a profound shift in perspective. The initial days of this journey were marked by a peculiar sense of absence, almost like a withdrawal. Yet, this void soon became a space of silence where I could reconnect with myself.

Rediscovering Time: The Luxury of Presence

One of the immediate benefits of my social media hiatus was the reclamation of time. Hours previously lost to mindless scrolling were now available for activities that brought genuine enrichment. I rediscovered the joy of uninterrupted reading, long walks, and deep conversations. This newfound time became a fertile ground for hobbies that had languished in the shadows of digital distractions.

The absence of the incessant need to document and share every moment of my life allowed me to be fully present in my experiences. Whether savouring a meal, traveling to a new place, or simply spending time with loved ones, I found a heightened sense of presence and appreciation for the here and now.

I also managed to start this blog!

Deepening Connections: Quality Over Quantity

Social media often fosters a superficial sense of connection, where interactions are brief and relationships can be diluted by the sheer volume of connections. In contrast, stepping away from these platforms allowed me to cultivate deeper, more meaningful relationships.

Without the backdrop of online personas, my interactions became more authentic. Conversations were richer, driven by genuine curiosity and a desire to connect rather than a performative need to present a curated version of myself. I found that my relationships, both personal and professional, were strengthened by this authenticity.

Professional Growth: Clarity and Focus

Professionally, maintaining a presence solely on LinkedIn proved to be a strategic choice. LinkedIn provided a focused platform for networking, sharing industry insights, and professional development without the noise and distractions of other social media. This clarity allowed me to engage more meaningfully with my professional network and stay updated on relevant industry trends without feeling overwhelmed.

Furthermore, the time freed from social media consumption was reinvested in my professional development. I attended more seminars, and engaged in thoughtful reading and reflection on my field. This intentional focus led to accelerated growth, positioning me better within my industry and enhancing my professional capabilities.

Cultivating a Deeper Life: Reflection and Personal Growth

The most profound impact of stepping away from social media was on my personal growth. The space created by this absence became a sanctuary for reflection and self-discovery. Without the external validation of likes and comments, I turned inward, exploring my values, goals, and passions with a renewed sense of clarity.

One of the most rewarding outcomes of this period has been my renewed relationship with reading. Without the constant distractions of social media, I found myself turning to books more frequently and with greater enthusiasm. Over the past year, I have immersed myself in a diverse range of literature and joined a very nerdy book club spanning classic novels, contemporary fiction, historical biographies, and insightful non-fiction. This rekindled habit of reading has not only enriched my knowledge but also provided a refuge of calm and contemplation in an increasingly chaotic world.

Books became a source of inspiration and intellectual stimulation a long time ago for me, offering perspectives and ideas that challenged my thinking and expanded my understanding. They also facilitated a deeper engagement with topics that resonate with my personal and professional interests, from philosophy and psychology to leadership and innovation. I have rediscovered this love by leaving social medial. My recent literary journey has been instrumental in fostering a deeper sense of empathy and curiosity, encouraging me to view the world through varied lenses and enhancing my overall cognitive and emotional well-being.

Additionally, reading more has cultivated a more reflective mindset, allowing me to draw connections between my personal experiences and broader human themes. This has translated into a more nuanced approach to both my professional endeavours and personal relationships, as the wisdom gleaned from books has informed my decision-making, problem-solving, and communication skills. Ultimately, this enriched engagement with literature has been a cornerstone of my personal development, contributing significantly to the deeper, more authentic life I now lead.

Conclusion: Embracing a Deeper, More Authentic Life

In stepping away from social media, I embarked on a journey that has profoundly enriched my life - including starting this blog. The absence of digital noise has allowed me to reclaim time, deepen relationships, and accelerate my professional and personal development. This experience has taught me the value of presence, authenticity, and intentional living.

As I reintegrate aspects of social media into my life to help promote this blog, I do so with a newfound perspective, mindful of maintaining the balance and depth I have cultivated. The past year has been a testament to the power of stepping back, reflecting, and embracing a life driven by genuine connections and purposeful growth. I look forward to continuing this journey, integrating the lessons learned into a deeper, more fulfilling existence.

As always, thanks for reading. Let me know if you have experienced similar effects since your own digital detox.
